Looe Festival of Words 1 – 6 October 2024 is a new, FREE celebration for readers, writers and anyone who loves words. Join workshops, crafts, literary walks, and author talks, an open mic, a writing-themed rockpool ramble, pop-up storytelling, a literary train takeover, a flagship Book Fair, and more. Everyone welcome!

Monday 30th September
A pre-Festival event Songs and Stories at Looe Library and Community Hub: 10.30am – 11am.
Tuesday 1st October
The first full day of the Festival, starting with A Way with Words at Looe Library and Community Hub from 10.30am, getting crafty with old books. In the afternoon, they’ll be looking at using landscape to create a story in a creative workshop led by Sam Horton
Wednesday 2nd October
Join local tour guide and author Mark Camp for a walk around Looe, using other writers’ words to guide you. In the afternoon, the Mor Poets will be running a workshop on writing poetry of the sea – suitable for everyone, in the Millpool Centre from 2pm – 4pm.
Thursday 3rd October
National Poetry Day! Festival events kick off with an author talk in the library, followed by My Armchair Gap Year a fun, interactive workshop led by Clare Owen looking at how we can bring the sights and sounds of the world to our desks, also in Looe Library and Community Hub. Rounding off the evening with an open mic at Riverside Church at 7.30pm with guests from Valley Verse, Liskeard Poets, and Cross Country Writers.
Friday 4th October
Explore the local environment and your own creativity in a spoken word poetry workshop in Kilminorth Woods, led by Caleb Barron. At 11am, Mark Camp will be giving a talk about Geoffrey Grigson’s Freedom of the Parish, a book partly about the history of the village of Pelynt, and partly a book about spending a childhood exploring the countryside. Throughout the day, look out for poet Sally Crabtree, who will be transforming the Liskeard station waiting room (Liskeard-Looe line) into a fabulous Literary Lounge.
Saturday 5th October
This big Festival day starts with a Book Fair at Millpool Centre, 10am – 4.30pm. Come and meet local authors and hear them talk about their books; the full programme will be available on the Book Fair event page. The fun continues throughout the day, with pop-up storytelling performances around town with the MAZED puppets, and Poetry on the Rocks, a family-friendly poetic rockpool ramble at Hannafore. The Looe Valley branch line will be buzzing as poet Sally Crabtree stages a literary train takeover – there’s a rumour that she’ll be bringing her creativiTEA trolley along – not to be missed!
Sunday 6th October
The final day of the Festival! Well-known writer and facilitator Jenny Alexander will be leading a creative writing workshop Worlds of Wonder in the Courtyard Café from 10am. The Festival will conclude with Sail! a final celebration, exhibition and sharing of work at Riverside Church starting at 2pm.
