When Gabrielle West wrote diaries about her War to her much missed favourite brother, serving in India, she had no idea that a hundred years later they would be of interest to anyone. Gabrielle joined the Red Cross, worked as a volunteer cook in Army Hospitals. She then became part of the Factory Police Force and was among the first Women Constables. She watched Zeppelin raids over London during her night shifts, and spent much of the War looking after the girls in various munitions factories. She took her bicycle and her dog, Rip with her everywhere and many of her pencil drawings are included as illustrations.
The original diaries are in the Imperial War Museum and the Stroud Museum.

The stag had his mouth open; roaring his cry across the hills.
“He is stupid,” said the badger. “Watch, there’s a man with a gun!”
“Aakk! Yes?” screeched the buzzard. “They’re by the big water.”
“How do I find them?” asked Rubic.
“You just go south! To the sea!”
“I am left here. You know what BB stands for, don’t you? The Beast of Bodmin! All I want is a mate and follow-ons.”
“Tad is ill,
The cow is dead,
Mam is tired.
No one loves us.
It’s all coal and more coal!
For more and more money!”
There was a crack of breaking glass, the five invaders expected to find cats and dogs, however all the cages were empty.
